Our Earth We Now Lament To See (Woodbury)

This text by Charles Wesley was included in our present 1989 United Methodist Hymnal for the first time since Wesley??s landmark 1780 collection. It appears in our hymnal today as text only. It is made available on our site in two musical versions with familiar tunes. The Neumark version uses thetuneWer Nur Den Lieben Gott, no.142 in our hymnal and the Woodbury version here uses the tuneSelena, no. 287.

Be sure to see the note at the bottom of the piece that explains the rather obscure imagery of stanza two. Although it is probably best not to make anything of the coincidental relationship, some worshipers will take note of the correspondence between the Revelation 9:11 passage and the 9/11 date of the terrorist attacks.
