We remember with grateful hearts and celebrate the life of Rev. Tom Butcher, a dedicated disciple of Jesus Christ known for his unwavering integrity, deep faith, and boundless kindness.

Rev. Butcher's journey in ministry began with his education at Adrian College (Michigan) and the Pacific School of Religion (Berkeley, California). In 1972, he joined the Detroit Annual Conference and began a lifetime of service in United Methodist churches. His pastoral journey led him from South Whiteford United Methodist Church, Samaria, Michigan, and First United Methodist Church in Owosso, Michigan, to Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa, Arizona, and Los Arcos United Methodist Church in Scottsdale, Arizona. In each congregation, Tom's leadership shone brightly as a beacon of hope and compassion. Beyond his pastoral duties, he held significant leadership roles, including conference council director, director of faith communities, and the first executive director of Path 1. Under his visionary guidance, the annual rate of new church starts doubled, highlighting his commitment to expanding the church's reach and impact.

Rev. Bener Agtarap, the current Executive Director of Path 1, shared the profound influence Rev. Butcher had on his life and career. He said, “God used Brother Tom to guide and support me, especially during my early days with Path 1. I am forever grateful for his trust in me as the first staff member of Path 1, working alongside him in its initial months. His faith in my abilities and his unwavering support were instrumental in shaping my journey.”

Friends and colleagues remember Tom as a mentor, encourager, and leader. His warmth, compassion, and unwavering support left a lasting legacy. Tom's humble leadership, infectious smile, and steadfast dedication to making the church accessible to new people in new places will forever be cherished by all who knew him.

Rev. Tom Butcher's life was a testament to his deep faith and love for others. While we grieve his passing, we find solace in the treasured memories we shared with him. His influence continues to inspire, and his legacy of kindness and faith lives on through the countless lives he touched.
