Challenges and Opportunities
RECORDING DATE: Thursday, September 30, 2021
PRESENTERS: Scott Hughes and Clayton Smith
Is retirement just about living in a permanent state of vacation? About sitting in rocking chairs and eating earlier? Surely there is more to retirement than this.
Even in retirement, we desire to be people with a purpose. As we approach and enter the stage of retirement, new questions emerge: “What will I do? Who am I in relation to what I do now (and what I don’t do now)? What and who will I focus on? How can I leave a legacy?”
Since sixty-two percent of United Methodist are age fifty or older, a majority of our church members are asking these and similar questions. On Thursday, September 30 at 1 p.m. CST, join Scott Hughes and Clayton Smith as they discuss the book At the Crossroads: Leadership Lessons for the Second Half of Life, co-authored by Smith and Dave Wilson. The book includes planning tools and interviews to help readers navigate the challenges of retirement. It may also be used as a six-week small-group Bible study. As the authors note, “Planning for your retirement years can be one of the most creative and constructive experiences to your life . . . Getting older may change your concept of self, but in no way discounts the vital impact of living fully every day.”
Helping our church members navigate these new questions and challenges will help them continue livings as disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. There is much more to retirement than what we leave; is also about new opportunities and new ways of being.
In this webinar, we’re going to explore how churches can be more intentional about being in ministry with those facing these new life challenges and helping disciples, ages fifty and older, be intentional about living with purpose in this new phase of life.
