Response to COVID-19 and the Coronavirus Concern
By Derek Weber
The World Health Organization has now declared the Coronavirus outbreak a pandemic and the President addressed the nation about some drastic restrictions. Now with many universities and a variety of professional sports taking significant steps to respond to the growing alarm at the Coronavirus and specifically COVID-19, most churches are also attempting to respond in appropriate ways.
Regardless of how serious you might think the virus really is, it makes sense to protect people as best we can. So, how should local churches respond? Of course the answer varies depending on your context, but here are some things to think about.
The Rev. Jeremy Smith is a United Methodist pastor who writes an amazing blog called "Hacking Christianity." He gave Discipleship Ministries permission to link to his post. Take a look at his writing in general, he always manages to make you think, even when you disagree with him. Smith pastors a church near ones of the facilities where a case of COVID-19 was discovered and wrote a very throughout and thought-provoking piece on how we as churches might respond.
Rev. Dr. Derek Weber, Director of Preaching Ministries, served churches in Indiana and Arkansas and the British Methodist Church. His PhD is from University of Edinburgh in preaching and media. He has taught preaching in seminary and conference settings for more than 20 years.
