Thanksgiving Over The Water

W. Richard Turner has provided this hymn text, Thanksgiving Over the Water, especially suitable for The Baptism of Our Lord, observed January 13, 2002, in The United Methodist Church. It might also be used as a baptismal hymn on any Sunday morning.

It is written in Common Meter, and the author suggests the tune, Winchester Old (470, United Methodist Hymnal). Others that may be used include Amazing Grace (378), St. Anne (117), and others listed in the Metrical Index under CM (86.86) on page 926 in The United Methodist Hymnal.

When all the world in chaos lay,
God swept across the sea;
And changed the darkness into light
for all eternity.

You washed the earth with Noah's flood;
we often wonder why.
But You remind us of Your love
with rainbows in the sky.

Our Lord was nurtured in the womb;
His mother's love he shared.
He lived and died and rose again
to show how much God cared.

As you were baptized long ago
on Jordan River's banks,
We ask God's grace to rain on us.
and give God praise and thanks.

Pour out your Holy Spirit, Lord
descend on us we pray.
And consecrate this little child
we baptize here today.
