This week is a great opportunity to celebrate the one-year anniversary of a more inclusive United Methodist Church through music. Remember, we help create the new heaven and new earth through our worship here today. The hymn “In the Midst of New Dimensions” (TFWS 2238) speaks to the themes of a new heaven and new earth. It was composed by Rev. Julian Rush, one of the first openly gay clergy people in the United Methodist Church. “Arise, Shine Out, Your Light Has Come” (UMH 725) and “From the Rising of the Sun” (TFWS 2024) tie in with themes in creation. “Love Divine” (UMH 384) and “They’ll Know We are Christians by Our Love” (TFWS 2223) relate to the John reading. “Welcome” (W&S 3152) would be a great opening hymn, and it ties in themes of creation.
For contemporary songs, The Many’s “All Belong Here” is an anthem of inclusion, and popular songs “Rainbow” (Kacey Musgraves) and “Over the Rainbow” could bring a new perspective to worship.
