Circling Toward Food Justice

Believing into Christ

Third Sunday of Easter, Year C

Try to make worship this week a rehearsal of the justice-oriented practices that will bring about a world where God’s abundance is available to all.

Food justice is a recognition that not everyone has access to the same kinds of nutritious foods that are available in some places, depending on geography, infrastructure, and economics. Unjust systems are in place. Part of our call as Christians is to interrupt those unjust systems and provide for all. Try to make worship this week a rehearsal of the justice-oriented practices that will bring about a world where God’s abundance is available to all.

If your congregation receives Communion this week, consider doing so in a way that allows people to serve one another. Form circles of ten to twelve people who share bread and juice with their neighbors. Alternatively, each person in a line may serve the person next to them before receiving it from the person on the other side. Using our hands and feet as Christ did to serve others is a kinesthetic reminder of how belief moves us to action.

If you are creating a terrarium or other visual display together throughout the season, add the first plant(s) this week. Plants do more for us than grow food. Without plants, we couldn’t breathe, and much of the fertile soil would erode from areas where we rely on it. Give thanks for the plants and the Earth. Make sure your plant has access to sun and water between worship services!

Consider inviting a farmer or gardener from your congregation or community to share a testimony about working for justice for the land or those who rely on it for their food. They might talk about how they use (or don’t use) pesticides or what part of the harvest they till back into the soil or give to those who are hungry. The speakers might want to invite congregation members to join them in some action related to food availability in your area.
