This week, many churches will celebrate the Eucharist, providing a fantastic opportunity to tie in food justice themes with the many rich Communion pieces within our tradition. The hymns “One Bread, One Body” (UMH 620), “O God, You Give Us Grapes and Grain,” and “Broken for Me, Broken for You” (TFWS 2263) invite us to expand our Communion Table to include all people and all creation. “Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore/Tu Has Venido a la Orilla” (UMH 344) and “The Summons” (TFWS 2130) tie in with the John text. In the Easter season, of course, our worship should be replete with praising God - especially with this Revelation text! So, “Holy, Holy, Holy” (UMH 64) “O For a Thousand Tongues” (UMH 57), “So Will I (100 Billion X),” and “Oh We Praise You” (contemporary) tie in well with that text. “Welcome” (W&S 3152) would be a great opening hymn, and it ties in themes of creation. Finally, the hymn “Pass Your Bread” incorporates food justice, creation justice, and inclusion. Click here to download the sheet music/chords.
Pass Your Bread by rev. Dr. Dirk Damonte
Permission is granted by the composer to use and distribute these lyrics in print or electronically for worship during this season.
Pass your bread around the world
Share your cup with all on earth
There’s a hungry, thirsty world, and it needs you
Pass your bread around the world
Pass your bread around the world
Make your table have a space
For the ones you’ve turned away
There is always room at the table of God’s love
Make your table have a space
Make your table have a space
Let your voice cry in the wild
Let your light shine in the dark
If the song’s to be heard, then we must sing it now
Let your voice cry in the wild
Let your voice cry in the wild
Pass your bread around the world
Share your cup with all on earth
There’s a hungry, thirsty world, and it needs you
Pass your bread around the world
Pass your bread around the world
