All-Knowing Creator

Ascribe to God

Second Sunday after Pentecost, Year B

Of course, this week’s psalm invites us to recognize that we are also a mystery to ourselves. So, how do we invite people to enter into the mystery of themselves as well as the mystery of God? Perhaps begin with singing and reading the assigned verses from Psalm 139 together.

In the notes for the “When the Spirit Moves” worship series (May 23-June 27), the writer states, “When the Spirit moves amazing things happen. But they happen through the people who allow that Spirit to motivate them, to guide and direct them, to empower them for the work of making disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”

As you plan the worship music for these first five weeks of Pentecost, keep in mind how music can aid in the movement of the Spirit. As you plan worship, take time to submit to the Spirit, listen, discern, and then gather to be communities of faith that are ready to go when the Spirit moves.

“Gather Us In,” 2236 TFWS, for this second Sunday after Pentecost works extremely well and makes a wonderful opening song for worship. If it is unfamiliar, consider having a soloist or ensemble sing it as gathering music first, perhaps on Pentecost Sunday, and then invite all to sing on this Sunday. Two delightful songs for sending forth are “Bring Forth the Kingdom,” 2190 TFWS, and “I’m Gonna Live So God Can Use Me,” 2153 TFWS. Both songs bring together the themes for this day and the call for discipleship to go out into the world to serve and live as redeemed people.
