Prayers of the People

Worship with Rejoicing

Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost, Year B

If you’re breathing a sigh of relief now that we’ve moved past 2 Samuel 11 and 12, think again. Just a few chapters later, David is embroiled in a family drama that has escalated to a violent war against his son, Absalom.

Our worship is an offering of selves, of words, of actions, of commitments, of confession and repentance—all to God. God is the audience of our worship. But we also turn our gaze outward toward the created world, toward the people around us; and we lift up prayers for healing and hope, for transformation and grace. Let our prayers – and our preaching – be a true intercession; let them be the prayers of the people who cry out to God and cling to hope.
